Our story

How Liberland was founded

On 13 April 2015, Czech politician and libertarian activist Vít Jedlička claimed a 7 km² parcel of land on the western bank of the Danube River that had been left unclaimed after a border dispute between Croatia and Serbia. Under international law, terra nullius — unclaimed land — can be appropriated by a state that occupies and administers it, and Jedlička declared the Free Republic of Liberland.

Liberland's founding philosophy draws on classical liberalism: minimal government, voluntary participation, individual liberty, and free enterprise. Its constitution enshrines voluntary rather than compulsory taxation, and citizens are expected to contribute rather than be compelled.

Since 2015, Liberland has attracted over 800,000 citizenship applications from people who want to participate in what the founders describe as "the freest country in the world." The community has grown to include representative offices across six continents, active on-chain governance, and a functioning blockchain-based legal system.

"Liberland is the first meritocratic republic governed on blockchain — where Liberland Merits represent each citizen's stake in the country."

What sets Liberland apart

A nation built on principles

Blockchain governance

The first nation to draft its constitution alongside a blockchain governance platform. Laws are smart contracts — transparent, public, and auditable.

🗳

Voluntary participation

Citizens participate because they choose to. Taxes are voluntary; governance tokens are earned through contribution, not compulsion.

🌍

Global community

77 representative offices worldwide, 9 diaspora villages, and annual gatherings bring the community together across borders.

The territory

Living on Liberland

Liberland's territory sits on the western bank of the Danube between the Croatian settlements of Zmajevac and Stari Jankovci. The land is forested, low-lying, and periodically floods in spring — but settlers have established the Liberland ARK Village as a base of operations for arrivals.

Citizens and settlers who wish to visit or live on Liberland's territory can apply through the settlement programme. EU passport holders can enter without registering in Croatia for short stays under 90 days. Settlers from other countries follow a separate process that involves registration with Croatian authorities.

For entry enquiries, contact border@liberland.site.

EU passport holders

Enter without Croatian registration for stays under 90 days. Travel in pairs recommended.

Non-EU nationals

Register with Croatian authorities first. A 90-day ban applies after initial entry.

Health insurance

Valid Croatian health insurance required for all settlers visiting the territory.

Settlement coordinator

Join Signal groups and connect with current settlers before your first visit.

Full financial transparency

Open books, open government

Liberland publishes yearly financial reports and tracks income and expenses on the Liberland Blockchain Dashboard. Financial reports from 2016 onwards are publicly available.
